Rods

Boart Longyear produces both round and hexagon rods.  Hexagon rods are more rigid, heavier and transfer energy more efficiently, while increasing flushing.  Round rods are generally lighter than hexagonal rods and are normally used in extension drilling applications.  Two different types of heat treatment are used to strengthen our percussive drill string components to maximize their performance and reliability.

-    Carburization is a process used to harden the entire rod surface both internally and externally to strengthen and extend the life of the rod.

-     High Frequency Induction is a process where only the thread ends of the rod are hardened to lengthen thread life.

Lightning RodTMSerie
The Lightning Rod™ Series provides a quick-change male/female rod designed for high-durability and air flushing, ideal for the surface rock drill and blast market.

RSTTM Series Rods and Bits
The Robust Standard Thread (RST) Series rock drill and blast rods and bits offers industry-leading strength and penetration rates.

Handheld (short hole) Steel
Provides a hexagonal chuck section to provide leverage for the rotation chuck bushing.

Extension Steel
Characterized by a duplicate thread on each end of the steel.

Tunneling Steel
Drill steel is available in many standard drifting jumbos.

Male/Female (M/F) Steel
A female part of the threaded connection is included as an integral part of the drill steel.  Avoids use of couplings and usually extends service life.
